TABB Certification Renewal: Important New Training Requirements for Technicians and Supervisors
TABB Certification Renewal: Important New Training Requirements for TAB Technicians and Supervisors
Attention all TABB TAB Technicians and TABB TAB Supervisors: there are added requirements for recertification during this renewal cycle.
Please review the information below and allow enough time to complete the required training before your certification expires. With the holiday season approaching, we strongly encourage members not to wait until the last minute.
Because of significant updates to the TABB TAB certification program, completion of the applicable TABB-specific refresher course is required as part of recertification. ICB will provide access to the appropriate TABB TAB renewal course based on the certification you hold.
These courses focus on the updated procedures and requirements reflected in the current TABB certification program, with particular emphasis on the SMACNA manuals that serve as the guiding documents for the TABB Technician and TABB Supervisor certifications.
The current ICB Certification Manual identifies the TABB Technician as responsible for testing, adjusting, and balancing air and hydronic building environmental systems and specifically lists three SMACNA publications as its guiding documents. The required SMACNA publications are available through TotalTrack to SMART members. If you do not currently have access, members associated with the Northern California Sheet Metal Training Center can use the Upgrade Course Application form to request access to the required SMACNA publications in TotalTrack.
Which Renewal Course Do I Need?
The renewal training requirements have been clarified as follows:
TABB Technician + TABB Supervisor: Complete the TABB Supervisor Renewal Training only. This satisfies the renewal training requirement for both certifications. You do not need to complete both courses.
TABB Supervisor only: Complete the TABB Supervisor Renewal Training through NEMI.
TABB Technician only: Complete the ITI TABB Technician Renewal Training.
These courses are not simply optional continuing education. They are part of the recertification requirements for this cycle and are intended to ensure certified individuals are current on the procedures and technical foundation of the updated TABB certifications.
The ICB Certification Manual also requires continuing education for renewal and states that CEUs must relate to the scope of the certification.
TABB Technician Guiding Documents
The current ICB Certification Manual identifies the following guiding documents for the TABB Technician:
SMACNA HVAC Systems Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Manual – Fourth Edition, 2023
SMACNA HVAC Systems Application – Second Edition, 2010
SMACNA HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual – Second Edition, 2012
The required SMACNA publications are available through TotalTrack to SMART members. If you do not currently have access, members associated with the Northern California Sheet Metal Training Center can use the Upgrade Course Application form to request access to the required SMACNA publications in TotalTrack.
TABB Supervisor Guiding Documents
The TABB Supervisor is expected to be knowledgeable in:
SMACNA HVAC Systems Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Manual – Fourth Edition, 2023
SMACNA HVAC Systems Application – Second Edition, 2010
SMACNA HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual – Second Edition, 2012
SMACNA HVAC Systems Duct Design – Fifth Edition, 2023
The required SMACNA publications are available through TotalTrack to SMART members. If you do not currently have access, members associated with the Northern California Sheet Metal Training Center can use the Upgrade Course Application form to request access to the required SMACNA publications in TotalTrack.
The renewal courses provide an important opportunity to refresh your knowledge of these documents and the procedures on which TABB-certified TAB work is based.
For additional information, members are encouraged to review the ICB Certification Manual.

Because this renewal cycle includes the additional TABB-specific refresher training, please give yourself enough time to complete the course and renewal process.
These refresher courses are also a good opportunity to revisit the SMACNA procedures that form the technical foundation of TABB certification. Whether you have been performing TAB work for many years or recently became certified, staying current with these procedures helps maintain the quality and consistency expected of TABB-certified work.
