Applicant Resources

To become eligible to start the 5-year Apprenticeship Program, you must have the following:

  1. A AFQT score of 40 or higher on the ASVAB entrance exam

  2. A valid CA Driver’s License or CA Picture ID

  3. Have a High School Diploma or GED

  4. Be 18 years or older

    This allows you to solicit work with our signatory contractors. Getting hired and indentured by the contractor gets you into the apprenticeship program

    New Apprentices start training each year in the fall

IMPORTANT DATES

The Entrance exam is only offered once a month on the 2nd Thursday

Application deadline for the Heavy Metal Summer Experience is May 30, 2026.

  • We will accept a transcript from your high school as long as it shows the completion date.

  • If your AFQT score is below 40 you may retake the test at the next scheduled test date. After 2 unsuccessful attempts you will have to wait six (6) months before you will be eligible to retake the test.

Continuing Education for local 104 members*

Journeypersons are encouraged to keep their certifications up to date and continue their education long after completing the apprenticeship program.

Please complete the upgrade course application so the training center can support you in achieving your goals.

Enrollment in advanced courses is limited to current Local 104 members.

Please have the following information available:

  • Valid identification

  • Social Security number (SSID)

  • SMART Member ID (see dues receipt).

Are you a member with an idea for a new upgrade course or certifications? Click here to submit a request for certifications, courses, and more.

  • All active Local 104 members can return to the training center at any point in their careers to take upgrade courses at no cost.

  • Upgrade courses are built on nationally recognized standards from the International Training Institute (ITI), manufacturer-specific training on specialized equipment, and curriculum developed by instructors to meet the evolving needs of the construction industry.

  • Active Local 104 members are encouraged to submit ideas for new upgrade or certification courses. Click here to request a course, certification, or training opportunity.
