Duct Leakage Testing Requirements & Workforce Standards
Effective January 1, 2026, the 2025 California Mechanical Code requires duct leakage testing to follow the SMACNA HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual and be performed by qualified, certified technicians.
Recognized certifications include TABB, AABC, NEBB, or another AHJ-approved equivalent. The TABB DALT Technician credential is especially well suited because it is focused specifically on duct leakage testing, documentation, and code compliance.
The result: more consistent testing, stronger accountability, and better-performing HVAC systems.
