First-Year Sheet Metal Apprentices Build Precision Fabrication Skills

Strong fabrication skills start with understanding how a flat piece of metal becomes a finished component. During their first shop week, our first-year sheet metal apprentices put that process into practice through hand brake bending, shape cutting, and fitting construction fundamentals.

Working with the hand brake, students learned how bend sequences affect forming accuracy and access for subsequent bends. Planning the order of operations helps prevent interference as a piece takes shape—a critical skill when fabricating sheet metal fittings.

Apprentices also practiced cutting multiple shapes, developing the tool control and dimensional accuracy needed to prepare material for forming and assembly. Each exercise reinforced the connection between accurate cutting, consistent bends, and proper fit-up.

The class continued with different types of sheet metal locks and end treatments for fittings, learning how formed edges support connection and assembly. These details introduce apprentices to the craftsmanship required to produce fittings that fit together correctly.

By combining cutting, bending, and connection techniques in their first shop week, our program gives apprentices hands-on experience with the processes they will build on throughout their training and careers in the sheet metal industry.
