From Rebates to Results: Powering High-Performance HVAC

On February 11, 2026, the Northern California Valley Sheet Metal Industry training center partnered with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to host HVAC contractors and technicians for an important educational event focused on energy efficiency, indoor air quality (IAQ), and carbon reduction.

SMUD experts outlined valuable rebate opportunities and workforce development assistance available for both residential and commercial projects. These programs help ensure HVAC upgrades not only move forward smoothly but also achieve intended energy efficiency and performance goals.  Rebate programs help contractors and building owners overcome one of the biggest barriers to energy upgrades, upfront cost, turning energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals into real, measurable results.

A key message of the day: installing a heat pump alone does not guarantee energy savings. True efficiency, thermal comfort, and improved IAQ are only achieved when systems are installed and commissioned by skilled, highly trained technicians who understand total system performance.

SMUD recognizes the value Sheet Metal Workers bring to the industry through our comprehensive five-year HVAC apprenticeship program and ongoing upgrade training. This level of training is critical to meeting California’s energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals.

SMUD also discussed single-family residential rebate opportunities available to union contractors. While some unions may not operate in the residential market, Local 104 Sheet Metal Workers, contractors and technicians, have long provided high-quality residential heat pump installations, ensuring systems meet code requirements and exceed homeowner expectations.

As the HVAC Union, Local 104 is proud to be a SMUD Preferred Training Provider and a SMUD Shine Award recipient. Our established partnership continues to strengthen the connection between workforce development, energy efficiency, and community impact.
